Well, we finally have a bit of winter on the banks of the mighty Bow River. Let's hope for a long, wet, cold winter and spring to help bump flow rates up for more consistent water through next season. Late November/ early December saw flow rates as low as 40 - 50 (CMS). As of late the flows have come up slightly, which is a bit of good news.
Recent water temps are in the low 30's (Fahrenheit). The bugs are pretty much gone, maybe some midge action on warmer days, but fish will now start moving into slower deeper wintering holes, which means great news for the trout spey casters, and nymph anglers. Make sure you are using tungsten beads to fish deep and slow.
Fly selection to include in your winter box:
Nymphs: Chai T, Tungsten Hare's Ear, Copper John's, and Lightning Bugs should produce decent success.
Streamers: Leeches, the Mini Me Graboid, Clousers, and Coffey's Sparkle Minnow are all good choices for bigger streamer/ swing flies.
